Rain / Rain / Rain 05.09.2019

                                    Rain, Rain, go away,

                                    Come again some other day,

Big ole Donnie wants to play!

I only want the rain to go away for a couple weeks, then return as needed. How do we get that to happen? Maybe we should all live in one of those big glass domes that has its own environment! You know what I am talking about, it would be an enclosed environment, kind of like what they have secretly put on the Moon or Mars. We could have solar panels inside making electric, and we could recycle our human waste making fertilizer and drinking water. We would be cut off completely from the outside world! L

Now that I think of it, we would all probably want some fresh air once in a while, and when it was raining on the big glass dome, we would wonder if it felt good, and would a drink of fresh, not recycled human waste water, be good?

Recycling waste is good, when you have a choice as to whether you want to use the after product are not. Living in a dome, you have no choice. Wow, living in a dome would be similar to being in the space station, except you would not be weightless. Drinking recycled liquids don’t sound good to me. How did you get me on this subject?

We received an inch of rain Wednesday morning in about 30 minutes. When I checked the rain gage later in the afternoon, we had a total of 2.25 inches of fresh, non-recycled, rain.

With all the wet outside yesterday, I stayed inside resting, and rejuvenating my senior body. I am now considering repainting this little office area. It would mean I will need to work my ole senior body.

The sooner I start on this office, the sooner I will get tired!

                                                            Black berries are green,

Grandpas are silly,                        Grannies are mean!

Bicycle rider 05/07/2019

It was a warm and kind of muggy Monday afternoon, it had been cloudy most of the day but luckily we had not received any rain. It was 5:00 pm, I had completed my tasks for the day and had wondered out to the Ford’s ole rocker for a rest, and an adult beverage. Tres and I was resting when my spouse of half a century ventured from the Homestead, she sat in the alternant rocker.

As we sat there conversing about the daily activities, a neighbor girl came down the street on her bike. She was in the standing position and riding with no hands. Seeing her riding with no hands brought back some old memories.

The neighborhood we lived in was close to the grade school we all went to, May Green Elementary. On weekends and during the summer months many of us kids would hang out on the playground of the school and at the old Fort “D”. Yes it was at one time a real fort and it was positioned on high ground where they could observe the Mississippi river. Ole Fort D has nothing to do with this memory, I was just setting the scene for you.

This ole memory is about bikes and kids riding bikes. A few of us kids had names for our bikes, my old bike was named Elvis. The street in front of the School went about two blocks south and we would arrive at Hildermans Hill. The hill itself was a little less than a block long and at the bottom of the hill there was a small grocery store, Hildermans Grocery. The owner was Vernon Hilderman, he was married to my mother’s sister Ora, which made Vernon my uncle. No, I never got anything free at the store.

Some of us boys would ride to the top of Hildermans Hill, and then coast down this hill with our hands off the handlebars. A good rider could make it to the bottom without holding on to the handle bars. I, of course, was a good rider. My bike was old and pretty much worn out. When I would get going down Hildermans hill I would release the handle bars and that is when Elvis would kick in. My bike would shake, rattle, and roll! And that is why I named the bike Elvis. The real Elvis, could also shake, rattle, and roll!

            Now let us change subjects.

As many of you know, the Fords have a Chevy pickup truck. The other day as we were on the way to have brunch, I noticed that my turn signals seemed to be working improperly. In the Fords ole Chevy, if you are going to change lanes you can partly engage the turn signal lever, after checking for traffic, and the turn signals will flash 3 times. I noticed that the Ford’s ole Chevys turn signals were flashing 6 times, not three!

Naturally, I assumed the computer had a problem.

As I continued driving and diagnosing the situation, I remembered I had pushed a button on the dash. This pickup truck has a bunch of buttons, so occasionally, I will push one of them just to see what happens.

Earlier I had pushed the trailer towing button. This button supposedly changes the way the transmission functions due to carrying or towing heavy loads.

I decided to disengage the trailer towing button, and the turn signals then flashed 3 times when slightly engaging the turn signal. Three flashes when not towing, six flashes when towing.      Who knew?

What?    You want to know what? Come on, don’t you have something interesting to do?      This person, wants to know why I would count the flashes my turn signal makes!

As a careful and alert senior driver, it is my responsibility to be aware of everything that is occurring in my vehicle! I always count the three flashes when changing lanes! I want to be sure the person behind me knows what I and doing, and I don’t want the turn signals to continue flashing as I proceed down the road!           Do you get it now!

New subject: Yesterday my schedule was messed up, which cause me, I mean allowed me to do more work. I usually pick the Alex up from school each afternoon, but yesterday afternoon I received a call saying I did not need to get the Alex. That allowed me extra time here at the Ford’s Homestead to paint. I don’t enjoy painting, but as I have wisely stated in the past,

I may not enjoy doing certain things, but I am glad that I can still do those things”!

Green berries 05/06/2019

Well the weekend is over but that does not mean I have a day of rest. We ran out of paint which impeded the painting severely. Enough about work let me tell you about the green berries in our back 40. The old berry vines are covered with green berries this year, maybe we have had enough rain to encourage growth. The three new plants have all surprised me and all three have green berries on them. In truth, I did not expect anything from them until next year.

As I have stated in the past, we have a new thorn-less black berry and it is doing remarkably well. If it continues to grow, and if it produces as well as those with thorns, then I would consider installing more of them.

Yesterday, after running out of paint, I then proceeded to manicure the front and mow the back yards. The so-called weather people are saying, after today we will have rain each day this week with some rains being very intense, 2 to 4 inches of additional rain. I might have been right about the coming of a, “Rain Forest Environment.”

Have you ever considered the words, Rain and Rein”? I just wondered if you had considered.

I am going to get a cup of coffee and sit outside while drinking it. So this short and sweet posting is now complete.

May your coffee be hot and strong!

Cinco De Mayo AKA May 5th 2019

Wow, two special days in a row. First we have May the 4th be with you, and then Cinco De Mayo, things couldn’t get much better.

Now let’s get back to my world for a moment. Yesterday we went out to lunch and upon returning to the Homestead I immediately went into the painting mode. I removed a door from the bed room and took it to the garage, where I painted it a couple times, and it does look better. I then painted 3 shelves that my spouse of half a century brought to the garage.

Those items are still in the garage, left there over night to properly dry before re-entering the Homestead.

My first wife’s plan, I mean our plan for today, is similar to yesterday’s schedule. Lunch, replace door one, remove door two, paint and allow to dry. We also will do some touch up work on areas that may have been missed, or have received less that appropriate paint coverage. After all that, I will be lucky if I am able to crawl to the bed. I might just sleep on the floor, as it would take extra effort to get onto the bed.

All this painting has depleted the Ford’s emergency fund to near zero. My present spouse will need to put in extra hours going through neighbors recycle bins in an effort to gather enough aluminum cans to replenish the Ford’s emergency fund.

I am glad it did not rain yesterday, and it isn’t supposed to rain today. It is much nicer for my favorite spouse to rummage through the neighbors trash looking for cans when it isn’t raining, and she usually finds more aluminum cans in dry weather.

Well I need to get dressed and take my favorite spouse to brunch, or this wonderful day will never get started.

May all your work efforts be voluntary!

Golden age 05/04/2019

I have recently been made aware that today is a special day. “What is this special day you speak of”, he asked with an odd looking frown on his face. I smiled at him, and quietly said, “May 4th”. “May 4th, he shouted, “Why the heck is May 4th a special day”? Again, still smiling, or maybe I was smirking, I quietly said, “May the 4th be with you”! He stood there looking at me and said, “Oh, May the 4th be with you, I see”. I then explained, starting at 12:00am Saturday, May the 4th, all the Star Wars episodes will begin airing on TV. Yes, I have been watching.

Yesterday afternoon, when the rain had stopped, I ventured out of the Ford Homestead to get a breath of fresh air. I looked around the neighborhood and then looked up to the heavens, when I saw something amazing. It was a rainbow, and yes I have a photo, but first I want to tell a story about a rainbow.
My brother Carl liked to fish, and was also a commercial fisherman on the Mississippi river for a while. He told my mom this story, and I was there when he told her. He said he was on the bank of the Mississippi river after it had rained, when the end of the rainbow passed over him. He didn’t mean that it was up in the sky, he meant that the actual rainbow basically touched him as it went over him. I remember he commented that he believed it happened because our Dad who was in heaven, was telling him something. Was it just a story he made up, or real, I don’t know.
I have always heard that there is a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. I personally have never been at the end of a rainbow, but I have taken a photo of the end of a rainbow. Click to enjoy.

The end of that rainbow is in our neighbor’s home, so in their home there is a pot of gold. I wonder if that pot of gold is real metal gold, or, if it is a pot of golden macaroni and cheese?
You are right, I find interesting subjects for this blog.

We had more rain last evening, but it was less than a ¼ inch. We are supposed to be almost rain free this weekend and then we will again receive the Rain Forest blessing.

May the fourth be with you!

What? No, we are not done! 05/03/2019

If you were to read and then recall what you had read, you would know we are not done. I have three doors to paint, and I am told I will be allowed to paint one shelf. My first spouse has many items that were removed from the bed room, she must decide what she will do with all of them. I hope we do not get any visitors that would want to spend the night, as the front bed room is full of items from our bed room.             Can we say Yard sell!
Rain has become a common thing here in Hewitt. Last week we received 4.5 inches of rain, this week if has rained almost every day, and as of now we have another 3 inches of rain and it is still raining. Our scientific staff here at the Ford Homestead have learned, “Hewitt is now receiving enough rain daily to be classified as a RAIN FOREST environment”. Who would have thought that the town of Hewitt could become a rain forest?
I am not sure what I will be required, I mean allowed to do today, possibly I will be allowed enjoy the rain by sitting on the front porch with a cup of coffee and watch it rain. Isn’t the rain great! J

On the way to school today, I asked Gabi if they named today Friday, because everyone has Fries on Friday. The first three letters are the same, “In Friday and Fries”. Gabi first gave me the look, she got that from her Granny Ford, and then she said, “No, we don’t have Fries on Friday”! Who knew?

I went to the freight hardware store last week to purchase a vise for the Ford’s ole work bench. This vise would be for wood, and they were out. I waited a couple days and called to see if they had one in stock, they did not! I waited a couple more days and called back and I was told they were out but they would get a truck Friday. I need to call and see if the truck brought one for stock. There are a couple other items I need, or want, I should make a list before I go.
The Ford’s ole work bench which was cleared of junk and painted, is now covered with paint cans and painting items. I guess there is no personal space for a senior retired person’s junk, I mean possessions. Its ok, I will stop crying in a while!

Not a cry baby, just need more attention!

Thursday, working again 05/02/2019

Well, I have been allowed to work again. My spouse and I will attempt to finish the wall today, which is everything except the doors, which I will be allowed to do as the last part of the project.
I noted yesterday, that due to the possibility of rain, I should mow my yard. I didn’t, but one of the neighbors did. I give up, and I resigned from the leadership position of the neighborhood appearance committee for equal and fair appearances. (Keeping all homes looking about the same, is that a socialistic neighborhood.)
I did go out into the ditch behind the homestead and cut the weeds yesterday. The City should do their job, so a 71 year old senior person, should not need to be cutting weeds in a drainage ditch. There is water standing in the bottom of the ditch, so I can’t cut those weeds as I am on a fixed income and it cost money to purchase boots.
I was allowed to relax in the ole rocker yesterday and that is when I observed Molly taking a break. Why would a cat with a tail want to take a break under a rocking chair? Scary! Photo to follow.

We did get about 1 inch of rain last night, possibly more coming today and tomorrow.
Well, I got to go now, my spouse of half a century has informed me that I am allowed to get to work on the wall in the bed room.
