Don't bug me 06.30.2022

The Don does not use that term too often, but I will use that statement today. I was outside this morning getting ready to water the potted plants in the front yard, as Molley the cat was getting into my way, wanting me to rub her back.

Speaking of watering plants, if one waters a flower bed one day, the next day if one pulls weeds from that bed, the weeds seem to come out much easier, due to the wet earth. My question is, if I water a flower bed or a black berry bed at 9:00am, how long before the earth is wet enough for me to easily pull the weeds?

Ok, let’s get back to the don’t bug me title. Alex was here all day yesterday, Gabi was here half the day, but the title line does not apply to either of my favorite grandkids. How do I explain the title line, possibly I have a photo that could help?

Now that bug was on the wall over the garage door, under the night light. My grandson Alex explained to me, the wings look like dried leaves, and they work as camouflage so a bird will not want to eat them. If you look closely, there appears to be a face on the back of the bugs head, I guess that is camouflage too. That bug did not bug me!

A different topic: Tres and I went out to the fence at the ditch behind the homestead where I had a loaf of bread that was becoming stale, it was not moldy, so I walk along the fence tossing each piece of bread across the fence into the ditch for the birds to eat. If I tossed them in our back yard, Tres would eat them all. Tres likes bread so I gave him a slice of bread.

I have watered the flowers out front this morning, and during the process, I spoke with a neighbor. We talked about our lawn sprinkler systems. He noted that his sprinklers are schedule to run three times a week while the temperatures are in the 100s! My sprinklers run twice a week; I might want to bump them up to three times during this extreme heat.

Well, I just acquired (for that one person, acquired means in this setting, got, or have) a cup of coffee and I am enjoying it.

I would like to present another photo, I have stopped picking the black berries, but there are still a few berries on the vines. I have a photo of one large berry, that I acquired today.

That is all for now, have a good day!

Mid-week 06.29.2022

Well, I have nothing scheduled for today, and I don’t think I did much yesterday. I did cut some of the black berry vines yesterday, these are the vines that had berries this year. Once a vine produces berries, that vine will not produce again the following year, so I remove them. I had my gloves on and I filled an ole trash can with clippings, and I am no way near being done.

I am looking for a new small plant to dig up, that I can give to a friend. Timing is important, a cool day may be all I need, to get me out there and dig. Getting a good root system when you dig a plant up, is very important. Maybe I can get Alex to help me in this project.

Now I have some photos for my enjoyment!

A neat start to the morning.

I have stopped picking the berries, but there are still a few growing, bird food!

A happy Sunflower still presenting its blooms. Now that is all I have for today hope you have a safe and fun day!

Have fun, fall down 06.28.2022

Now for that one person who read the title line, yes, the Don was having fun and the Don fall down! don’t get excited, sit still and allow the Don to explain.

This all happened yesterday, the Alex was here, and he was mowing the front yard. The Don had a cup of coffee and was sitting outside more or less as a supervisor for the work that Alex was producing. Actually, Alex knows how to mow in a safe manner, and he does not require close supervision.

The Don had brought an ole office chair from the garage out to the driveway, where there was a shady spot, and he was sitting on that chair. This chair use to be in the Ford’s ole office and when its replacement went into the office, the ole chair went out into the garage. It does work good in the garage when working on a project, one can move from place to place without getting out of the chair, it has rollers on it

Now the Don was enjoying his cup of coffee as he sat there, and he would from time-to-time spin around on the chair. Now this chair will make two to three complete turns with one push, and I was having fun. Heck, I was feeling like a kid again, when I was spinning around on the chair. I had finished my cup of coffee and I decided to move the chair just a couple feet to get back into the shade. I was close to the edge of the driveway when I was moving and then it happened. Two of the wheels went off the drive, and the chair when backwards with me in it all the way down to the grass covered ground.

I hit the ground and did not feel any pain, so I began to laugh at myself. As I was laughing and trying to get up, I thought, I bet I will be hurting tomorrow. Then I thought, did any of the neighbors see me flip off the drive?

The good part of this, if there was one, I fell backwards with the back of the chair covering my entire back, it worked like a pad for the ole senior persons back. I feel fine and I have a photo of the chair from the back so you can see why I did not break anything.

Now in the photos we see the chair next to the edge of the drive, and then we see the Don in the chair, do not look at the bald spot on the back of the Dons head. The chair back protected the Dons back when he went backwards off the driveway. The good Lord directed the chair, to protect the Don!        I believe!

I have a photo of the front yard after my favorite grandson, “Alex”, finished mowing.

You are correct, Alex does good work for his silly ole grandpa!

New topic: we got some rain yesterday afternoon (one half an inch). My favorite wife and I was sitting outside when the lightening started, and the wind increased. The rain drops began to fall, and we headed inside. We are thankful for any amount of rain. We would like to have one of those ole Missouri rains, you know, the rain comes on and off all day, with no runoff, and at the end of the day you have a couple inches of rain in the gage.

Tuesday morning: I checked the rain gage to see how much rain we received last night, and it shows one and a quarter inch. That was enough overnight rain to activate the override switch and turn off the Ford’s lawn sprinklers. Wow, we saved a dollar!

Be happy and smile!

Another day 06.27.2022

Another day without a dollar, what can I say, ole retired people need money.

I haven’t much to talk about today, but I do have a comment from the bible.

JOHN 21:18

Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to gird yourself, and walk wherever you wished; but when you grow ole, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will gird you, and bring you where you do not wish to go.”

JOHN 21:18

Verily, verily, I say unto thee, when thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.

Two different ways of saying the same thing. Now we know that even in the Bible old people basically are taken care of and also taken places they don’t want to go.

Any thoughts on that?

Topic change: Alex is here today, and I will get him to mow the front yard for me. I will need to go get Gabi before lunch and hopefully I will get a couple naps in during the day.

For that one person, I did go get a breakfast burrito this morning, and I have watered all the flowers front and back.

I have a photo of Tres taking it easy on the couch, Sunday, day of rest.

Abortions 06.26.2022

Abortions seem to be the topic of the day. Everyone has their own opinion of the subject, and one can get into some big discussions on the subject. I have my opinion on the topic, and in a one on one, I will be happy to give my point of view, and I will listen to your point of view. Yep, that discussion would need to be a two-way discussion. You would not change my mind and I would not change yours, but we would understand the other person’s point of view.

Enough on that topic, and I do not have anything else to speak or write about, but maybe I can create something else to report. I guess I could make up a story about a frog. If there was a story about a frog, would it be interesting?

The following is a story about a frog named Zog.

It was in the summer of 1985; the weather was hot and dry as usual in west Texas. Now a lady name Ethel had a small flower bed with a few flowers. On either end of this small flower bed was a light blue flower pot which was made of glass, and these flower pots were about 12 inches tall. Both flower pots had flowers that needed to be watered every couple days. In one of the flower pots the frog Zog lived.

On the days when Ethel would water these flowers, the frog Zog would jump out of the pot and hide under a small log until she finished watering. When Ethel would finish watering and leave the area Zog would go half way down the flower bed where his friend Ed, the frog lived. Now Ed was a frog like Zog, but he was much older and could no longer jump from the ground all the way up into the flower pots, so Ed now has his home in a hole in the ground.

Zog and Ed are good friends, and each night they would get together and both go through the flower bed looking for any large or small juicy bugs. The two friends had been lucky as there were plenty of bugs in this flower bed.

One day Ethel was noticing that some of the leaves on her pretty little flowers, appeared to have been eaten by some bugs. Two days later when Ethel was again watering her flowers, she noticed more leaves had been chewed on, or were missing. She thought, “I need to do something to get rid of these bugs”, so she called a friend who suggested she get some bug spray and spray all the flowers in the little flower bed.

The next time Ethel went to town to buy groceries for the week, she also bought some bug spray. Returning home Ethel read the instructions on the bug spray, which said spray the flowers late in the evening, just before dark. Ethel was good at following instructions so she did as the instructions said, and sprayed everything in the little flower bed that evening.

Well as usual, Zog met with Ed just a little after dark and they begin hunting for juicy bugs. They were surprised at how many they were finding on the ground that evening, and Ed noted that the juicy bugs seem to have a different taste, to which Zog agreed. The two friends filled their bellies and returned to their hiding places, Ed in his hole, and Zog in his flower pot.

During the night, both Ed and Zog became sick, both had stomach aches and were throwing up. The next morning Zog was still sick, and feeling very weak, as he jumped out of the flower pot and went to check on his old friend Ed…

The point to the above story is, I had a discussion with someone the other day, who had been asked to write a fiction story. I had suggested, when you are asked to write about a fiction story just get started and make up things as you go. Fiction is nothing more than fibs that are written down.

You can make up the ending.

I guess I am done 06.25.2022

Wow, the Don is done! What could the Don be done with; you should have asked?

The Don did his chores yesterday, he even checked the air pressure in the spare tire on the Ford’s ole Chevy, and then he drove out to the Bunk House where he was once again disappointed!

I should state, the Don was disappointed in several ways this time.

First off, they have changed the counter where one places their order and pays.

The lady that has been there for years at the cash register, is not there.

The people working behind the counter were all strangers to me.

They most likely have a new owner.

They did not have the toothpicks

I ordered the turkey sandwich as usual; but it took 15 minutes to get it to my table.

The turkey taste ok, but the bread it was on was not ok, it cost $7.50.

They had music from a radio station playing on the PA system, too loud.

I do not plan to ever go back there again!

The trip was 77.5 miles and I got 22 miles to the gallon, that means the cost of the food and gas for a disappointing meal was, $24.70”! I should have stayed at home.

Today: this morning I watered all the flowers front and back yard. I then got the weed trimmer and trimmed around everything in the back 40. I picked up the litter from the back 40, and I was also in the poopa-loopa! Do you like that name? Poopa-loopa is what come out of the south end of a north bound dog.  Then I aired up the tires on the Ford’s ole riding mower and mowed the back 40.

I was allowed to take a shower and a 15-minute nap. The nap seemed to help my ole tired body a little. Then I was allowed to take my favorite wife to town where we purchased a water mister and a portable lawn sprinkler. The mister is to provide a cooling area in the back 40 for the Tres and all the birds, squirrels, rabbits and anything else that needs to be cooled. The new portable lawn sprinkler will be used to water areas not covered by the sprinkler system.

A friend just dropped by and gave us some information about a few flowers we have. It has been so hot that my first wife had some questions. We also had a flower bloom for the first-time last night, I got a photo of the bloom.

The bloom was there this morning and was gone by lunch.

Well, I guess that is it for today.

No toothpicks, no fun!

Exciting! 06.24.2022

Nope, it wasn’t an exciting day. Actually, I believe that can be a good thing, as some excitement can be due to accidents and so on. There were no accidents or injuries yesterday, and the day was not exciting.

I did not water the flowers, I did not mow the lawn, I did attempt to sit out on the front porch and read a little, it was so hot that the ice in my glass of water melted. Heck, we didn’t even sit outside yesterday afternoon as it was 104 yesterday.

What are my plans for today? That is a good question. I do plan to spray some areas for bugs today, that isn’t much fun. I had considered going out for lunch at the bunkhouse as a reward for doing the spraying, and then I thought about it. I don’t go too often now that I don’t have a motorcycle to ride, and the last time I was there they did not have Tooth Picks

Allow me to clarify, Tooth Picks when referred to in this soon to be well written article, are not the Tooth Picks one would use to clear items from their teeth, these Tooth Picks are thinly sliced peppers and onions, that are deep fried, and served with ranch dressing! I actually like the Tooth Picks as much or more, than the BBQ sandwich I usually get. Imagine how bad I felt the last time I was there, my spouse of more than half a century was there with me, and they did not have my Tooth Picks.

My favorite wife will be going into town today, so if I go to the Bunkhouse, it will be a long drive all by myself, and we know ole senior retired people don’t like to drive or eat alone!

Also, I have considered the cost of this type event. The sandwich, Tooth Picks, and tea will cost, tax, title and license included, about $12.00. Now my first wife may have been able to find enough aluminum cans this week to cover that $12.00 cost, but will she allow me to use it for a lunch for myself.

Also, let’s consider the drive out and back, round trip it will be about 60 miles. Let us assume that the Ford’s ole Chevy will get 15 MPG on the highway, that means, I would use at least 4 gallons of gas, costing $17.60. When we combine the costs, we have expended $29.60!!!

It would be nice if we were real people and could afford all the nice things you real people enjoy, but we are no longer real people, just ole senior retired people.

I guess I should just stay home and eat left overs, if there are any, hope you real people enjoy your lunch.

Real or not, have fun!

Burrito again 06.23.2022

I began the title line with Burrito again, as a friend had commented that eating the burritos might change my nationality, SI Senor!

One might assume that I am going to tell you, that I was outside before the sun came up watering the flowers. I was not! Things changed, my favorite wife provided me with a device that allows me to check and see if the soil in the flower pot is dry, moist, or wet. Knowing that, I am then able to determine which plants need my detention, I mean attention.

I used the device this morning, and yes it was before the sun came up, an all plants in pots, do not need to be watered today. Wow a work free day. Since it is a work free day, what will the Don have to do between naps?

The Don has already gone to the coffee place for a cup, went to the teller machine for a buck, and to the burrito place for a breakfast burrito, all that, and I arrived back home before 7:00am.

I talked with an ole friend in Missouri last night and he noted that he was getting ready to begin picking his black berries, as I am finished with my harvesting. He noted that his berry vines are all thornless and he also makes wine from black berries, grapes and some other berry, but I forgot the other berry’s name. he must get a lot more berries than we do.

Another topic; what a person’s face says about their attitude. As I drove to the bank this morning, I observed two ladies who were out early attempting to beat the heat, as they exercised. Both ladies appeared to be in good shape, one of the ladies looked as if she was not happy, not enjoying the exercise, while the other had a positive look on her face, it may not have been a smile, but she seemed to be happy. I also noticed that both had their cell phones in their hands, was the one who seemed to be unhappy talking to someone on the phone, while the other may have been concentrating on something positive. Body language, it tells a lot!

Well, I guess I will go, I need to find some papers and I need to make a call or two.

Good morning 06.22.2022

It is a good morning, and I am writing this in the morning, I have no idea when you might read this, so I will say, “Good day”!

Since no one has asked, allow me to update you as to this morning’s activities. I have driven the Ford’s ole Chevy to get a cup of coffee and a burrito. I have eaten the burrito and am in the process of drinking my coffee.            What? You want to know if that’s all the Don has done this morning, the rest of my morning activities are none of your business, how do you like that?

As I was a motivating over the hill,

I saw Maybelline in a Coop Deville, wait a minute, that is not true, I did see a woman in the vehicle next to me at a stop light and her face caught my attention. Facial expressions make lots of statements, as an example, a smile can say you are happy, without you saying a word. The expression on this person’s face was zero. She wasn’t happy, or sad, she did not appear to be upset. She had the most blank expression that I have ever seen. I have no idea where her mind was, and her face was not telling anything. Body language tells a lot, and she was telling me, “My mind is in neutral. She needed someone to say good morning to brighten her day, or she could have turned the radio on and listened to some happy music.

Topic swap, I need to water the flowers in the flowerpots out in the front yard, as soon as I get some shade, I had already watered outback before I went to get the coffee and burrito, but I did not want to let that one person know, he always asks questions. I have two photos from this morning, one of a rose trying to hide, and one of the sunflower growing in the #2 berry bed.

I have a few small projects to do today, nothing that requires too much work. To be honest, I just do not like working out in the extreme heat.

My present wife and I did do the dog wash yesterday, I was surprised a little bit. As usual I set the two benches facing each other about 4-feet apart, the CEO sits on one while I sit on the other and then we get the Tres to get in between us for his wash down.

Well, yesterday I set the two benches up, and before we could sit down the Tres walked in between them, indicating he was ready for his cool shower. When I started to spray him my first wife said that water is hot. Yep, the hose had been laying in the sun and the water was very hot. I sprayed the water out of the hose until it cooled down. Now here at the homestead, this time of the year, cool water just means it isn’t hot. Cool water comes from the fridge, not out of a faucet.

I need to do some weed eating out back, areas where Alex did not get to with the mower last week. I have reviewed the front yard and I do not think I will need to mow again until the middle of next week.

Well, there seems to be enough shade in the front yard, so I better get out there and water the flowers. Hope you have a nice day!

Tuesday 06.21.2022

Spring has sprung, fall has fell, summer is here, and its hotter than, well it is hot!

We have officially moved into the summer season. I hope that it doesn’t get any hotter than it has been, if it does, we will all need to just stay inside. As I understand it, the days will get shorter now, so that means winter must be coming!

Plans for today, not a lot of anything. I will need to go pick my granddaughter up in a couple hours, but other than that just sit around, and be in my wife’s way all day.

I needed a short hose for the back 40, as the short hose I had been using was leaking. I guess I should explain before that one person asks a question.

I have a 100-foot hose connected to the faucet at the back of the Ford’s ole homestead. A 100-foot hose will not allow me to water the #2 black berry bed. A 100-foot hose gets me to one end of the #2 bed, but not to the entire bed, so an additional short hose (20 feet) gets me to the entire bed.

I had a piece of old hose that was missing an end, so I decided to get a coupling from the hardware store which I could attach to the ole hose making it usable. I went to the hardware store where I found the connector and it was $8.00 not including tax. I then found a 15-foot hose for $11.00, which I would not need to repair. I bought the 15-foot hose, and now I can water the #2 bed again.

I will go out and check the black berries this morning, but I do not expect to find many.

Hope you have something to do today, that is not outside in the heat.

Have a safe and blessed day!

Starting a new week 06.20.2022

Well, it starts this week. What is it, it is summer, at least, that is what they are saying? I think summer has been here for about 6 weeks now, but now they are going to recognize its here.

Another subject somewhat on the same topic: we have not had rain for a while, and I have not been allowed to use my new windshield wipers. I paid a fortune fore the wipers, and not even a little mist. I guess I could get in the truck and have my favorite wife spray it with water from a hose.

We will have Gabi here at the homestead today, Alex is at Boy Scout camp this week. When she gets here, we will determine if she would enjoy a breakfast burrito, and if so, I will be allowed to leave the homestead, for a short trip to the burrito factory! I might even drive as far as the star coffee place for a cup, and if Gabi rides with me, it will cost me more. Grandparents are generous.

Topic change; I did check the black berries this morning and there was a few that were ready to pick. The number one bed is finished and I will need to determine when I can trim it back. The number two bed still has several berries but they are taking their time getting ripe, and the birds are getting their share. The number three bed has surprised me, it has produced very well, even though this is its firsts year for production.

I have a photo of the volunteer black berry that is growing, and also starting to produce a few berries, behind the shed.

The tomato rings were put behind the shed as we did not need them, and the berries decide to grow inside them. Look closely and you will see a few volunteer berries.

I guess that is about it for now, have a safe and productive day.

Share your Blessings!

Father's Day 06.19.2022

To each and every father, I wish you a happy and safe Father’s Day!

Today is Father’s Day and my favorite wife and I plan to stay home today and rest, although I have already been outside watering the jasmine in the new bed along with flowers in flowerpots, and I have picked black berries. I did repair the hose that has a leak in it with some duct tape, I know you real people would buy a new hose, but us ole retired people who are on a fixed income have to be a little more inventive. The tape slowed the water down, it was not spraying out, just dripping a little, photo to follow.

On that note, my black berry picken (picken is a word I learned in Missouri) has come very close to an end. I got very few today, although I will venture forth and check for a few late bloomers. The volunteer plant behind the shed, that is growing inside a tomato ring, has mostly green berries on it, and one of them is almost red. I will attempt to harvest that berry if the mockingbirds will leave them alone.

Topic alteration: yesterday our family got together and celebrated Father’s Day, a day early. We did go out to lunch, and I must say, we had good food and enjoyable conversations. Now as usual, I did get some nice Father’s Day cards, and a couple gifts, you know some new shirts and some Cuban Cigars. I also received a new pair of shorts yesterday, but I had ordered them myself. I have a photo with one of the cigars and I had the new shorts on.

I did not say you could see the shorts, I just said I had them on. The shirt? No, the shirt is an ole shirt. No, the cigar was not lit, they do not have to be lit to enjoy them.

Well, I guess that is it for now, I might get a cup of coffee, and take it easy for a while.

Happy Father’s Day!

Made it to Saturday 06.18.2022

Well, I came in here to the puter room at 8:15am. Why did the Don feel the need to point out the exact time he made it into the puter room? This was done in an effort to enlighten you, the reading public, and that one other person, as to the accomplishments of the Don, prior to 8:15 on this soon to be hot Saturday morning.

The Don was able to drag is ole senior body out of the Ford’s ole bed and make his way into the kitchen where he procured a cup of coffee. He allowed himself to sit on the Ford’s ole recliner while he ingested the cup of coffee and pretended to watch the so-called news.

After the cup of coffee was depleted, the Don proceeded out into the back 40 where he watered all the plants in pots, (except for three plants, he had been instructed by the CEO to water the cacti every other time). He then proceeds to water the black berries and two flower beds.

After all that strenuous work, the Don returned to the homestead where he acquired the small basket that he uses when picking black berries, he also grabbed a cane. He then staggered back out into the back 40 hoping to pick some black berries. At the number three berry bed, there is a bird house. I have notice that there are sounds of baby birds coming from the bird house. As I was picking the berries this morning one of the parent birds buzzed my head, warning me to get away.

After completing the berry picking and returning to the homestead, I was then allowed to go out front and water all the plants in pots along with the new jasmine bed. During this process the ole hose sprang a leak. Now we need a 50-foot hose, a 20-foot hose, and a 5-foot hose. Wow, we can’t afford gas, and now we need hoses, I guess I will need to get a job.

Topic alteration: the other day Alex and I was out in the back yard when a bald eagle flew under the tree and then up and over the neighbors’ trees. Alex said it was a bald eagle and I believe him. There are hawks and eagles in this area. This morning I saw an eagle floating around, it was too far away to see if it was bald, but I know it was an eagle. Photo to follow.

Yesterday afternoon as I sat outside, I noticed a cloud that could have brought rain, but it didn’t. I like clouds, so there is a photo to follow.

As one should be able to see, I didn’t have a thing to do this morning before coming into the ford’s ole puter room at 8:15.

May your day be as restful as the start of mine.

Who supervised what? That is a good question, and as we all know, my favorite wife supervises me, “all the time”! Yesterday, I was allowed to do some supervision. Yep, I supervised Alex, our favorite grandson as he mowed the yards. I am happy to say he did a good job. I did some trimming with the weed eater, as he had never worked with one of them. Later in the day Alex did get a little time using the string trimmer. We will get him more involved with the string trimmer as the summer progresses.

Alex will be away at scout camp next week, so I am attempting to engage Gabi into the mowing process. She has not yet consented, but I will keep working on her.

I did get all the flowers in flowerpots watered yesterday; I even watered the berry beds. The black berries are still producing, but not as much now, as in the beginning.

As we were sitting outside during the hot afternoon, we noticed that the pecan tree is producing some pecans. We hope that there will be some pecans inside the shells this year. Last year, there was several pecans and almost everyone had nothing inside. I have threatened to cut the tree down if it doesn’t produce, sometimes a threat works. Photo of new pecans to follow.

What are my plans for today, I have very few plans, but I will list them? Go and get a breakfast burrito, go and pick up some shirts at the laundry, maybe get a cup of coffee at the star place, rest!

Have a safe and fun day!
