Changing of policy 02/28/19

As the title of this amazing article states, we here at the Ford Homestead have in fact had a, “Changing of policy”. For those thousands of people who read the preceding article, they all know we had planned to not open the doors to the new bird homesteads until we received, “the first and last month’s rent in advance of moving in”! We had also planned to charge more for couples with babies.
There was a board meeting here at the homestead, and after hours of discussion a vote was taken. We will no longer charge for any of the bird community staying in any of the houses, new or old! We have also open the new homes and temporarily hung them in a tree. Photo to follow.

We will attempt to find permanent locations for these two houses.
I would like to say thanks for the advice received from readers, as to the door openings for bird houses. The size of the hole has a direct effect on the type of bird that inhabits the house. We did use 1.25 inch openings on these houses, which seems to be the right size for sparrows. We have been working on the documentation of the plans and bill of materials for the bird house, hoping to get a patent on the house.
I was able to remove an old dead rose bush from flower bed #5. It took some digging and an ax to get it out of the ground. Being very careful during the removal process, I was stuck only one time by the thorns.

May your day be filled with kindness, some coming from you!

No work for the wicked 02/27/19

The title line seems a little off, No rest for the wicked was what I was trying to state. Wow, I made my first mistake again. Today I did not pull weeds from the flower beds as I did yesterday. I had decided to build a bird house similar to what we had seen at the big home store the other day. My thought was to create a bird house similar to the one we observed at the store and then create a set of plans that anyone could follow it they want.
I have the plan but have not completed the bill of materials yet. The sample was built using a fence picket which isn’t overly expensive. Also I do not have a hole saw that is the size I needed. I will need to go to the Harbor store tomorrow, and try to get a 1.50 inch hole saw. Also I used screws to hold it together, I want to be able to take it apart, but nails would work just fine if one did not want to take it apart later.

Yes, you are correct, that may be the first time you have been observant in a long time, I am almost proud of you. The holes have not been drilled. They will be drilled into the houses when the birds pay the first and last month’s rent in advance of moving in! (We charge more when they have babies.) You know we are on a fixed income and every penny counts.
That’s ok, you don’t need to show interest in this subject, my grandson might want to build one since they are talking about hand tools and wood working projects in the cub scouts. He said his Nana likes birds and she would like a bird house. (Nana is the other grandmother.)
We will provide more info on this project as we make progress in completing all the planning and details.

You don’t need to like it, as long as I do!

6th anniversary 02.26.19

I received an email stating it was my 6th anniversary, to be honest with you, I would have thought it was much longer than that. I may turn on the other Fords ole computer and see if I can find more information on this anniversary date.

If one was interested in my anniversary, which obviously one is not, they would have asked, “Your sixth anniversary of what”? To which, if I believed one cared, I would have stated, it is my sixth anniversary of…  I am sure no one cares and for that one person who thinks it is my sixth anniversary of retiring, they would be incorrect. I will have been retired 8 years next month.

Wow, I have been retired almost 8 years. “Time fly’s even when you are not having fun”! The following is a comment from a retired person, me.

Experience is needed by many of the people who are in charge. Young, highly educated people in charge, also need experience. Many people who are in charge swing left or right when they should be in the center. That is not a political comment, and if you bear with me, I will explain.

Left: Some who are in charge get to involved in their daily reports and paper work, and do not interact with or in some case’s know what is happening in their work areas.

Right: If you are thinking at all you now know, some get to involved in the work of their areas and let their own work slide.

Center: Now you should understand, being in the center means, they apply a proper amount of time to their work and a proper amount of time to the work in their areas.

It is my opinion, companies should consider contracting with some of their retirees to be outside advisors. An outside advisor does not need to be careful with their comments in an effort to keep their job. They are retired, and can be totally honest with upper and middle management.

A retired advisor could point out concerns without fear of upsetting the boss. The boss could run ideas past the retired advisor, and receive experienced advice. An advisor would not be afraid to point out those who should not be employed there.

Wow, how did I get off on that subject? Let me get back to the original topic, anniversaries. I do remember a friend asking why I had done that. My answer was, I heard you could do it so I did it.

Heck, I had referred to myself as reverend Ford in the past so why not sign up to be a minister. I went on the internet and registered. I did not get the certificates and ID cards as I would have had to pay and the site at that time was not secure. Now they are secure and want me to purchase the certificate and ID. If I had some extra money I might get them but being on a fixed income every dollar counts.

Now you may understand why I preach so much, I am not a minister, I am a preacher!

May all employees work safely, productively and cooperatively!

A new beginning 02.25.19

If you had read the previous well written article, you would be aware of the disaster that had befell, or is it befallen, which ever, the disaster at the Ford’s Homestead. The Ford’s ole coffee maker did, “Give up the ghost”. It was a sad time as I carried it out to the back 40 and gave it a proper burial. Wait a minute, there wasn’t a burial, I took the dead coffee maker to the trash cart and deposited it there.

My spouse of almost 5 decades purchased a replacement coffee maker, using a couple coupons and discounts. Alex was here when we took it from its box, and he showed me how it worked. There was some coffee and one hot chocolate pod that came with the maker. Alex showed me how to make the hot chocolate, for him!

The new unit is the same brand as the ole one, but it had some differences in the operation. One thing that I see as good, it will shut itself off after nonuse of 2 hours, or you can push a button and shut it off, if you are not going to use it.

I would like to say thanks to everyone who sent donations for the new coffee maker, but…

On a different subject; my present spouse and I went to the races today. These races were held at a local church. The cub scouts were racing cars that they made. The cars had a weight limit of 5 ounces. The scout leaders also entered their cars. Alex came in second in his class, and his dad David came in second in his class. The cub scouts got to race their cars against their dad’s cars, and Alex beat David. It was a good time for all.

The weather here today, Saturday, was warmer than expected. The weather people were saying it would be around 62 degrees and it hit a high of 73. It was windy but we can put up with the wind if it is that warm.

Sunday, we went to the barrel restaurant as usual today for brunch, it was good. On the way home we stopped and bought some dog food and I got another pair of $12.00 jeans. Then we proceeded to the dollar tree where I purchased a couple bags of hard candies. I keep them in the Fords ole Chevy, so I have a sweet time when I drive.

Arriving back at the Ford homestead, my present spouse suggested we wash the Fords ole pot hound. Since it isn’t very warm outside we did the wash job inside. Tres was unwilling at first, but seemed to enjoy the shower as we proceeded. The problem with giving him a shower he does not shake until he steps out of the shower. We put two towels on the floor, he drips a lot, and my first wife has a towel that she puts over him when he shakes. She dries him as I rinse off in the shower, and then Tres goes nuts running through the house. Finally we get him outside and he runs wild for a while.

Well it is time for happy hour, got to go.

Monday morning; it is supposed to be a nice day today, and I hope to get to work outside for a while. There are many flower beds that need the attention of our grounds keeper, or me.

As I was watching something on the TV, I can’t remember what it was but, someone on the TV said, “I can’t wait”. That got me to thinking. Yes I know, here we go again, the Ford is thinking of some silly subject. My brain went in the following direction.

Have you ever been in a car starting on a trip, and someone says, “I can’t wait until we get there”? Possibly there is a new movie coming in a week and someone says, “I can’t wait until next week”! Tomorrow is Christmas and someone says, “I can’t wait”!

Let’s consider the last comment, “Tomorrow is Christmas, I can’t wait! There is nothing that person can do, other than wait, so why do we say, “I can’t wait”!

Ok, now I understand! You just said, “I can’t wait until this silly Ford stops writing”!

You just hurt my feelings, so I say, “The end”!

I can’t wait until spring gets here!

Couch potato 02.22.19

After writing the title line, it came to my mind, “Why a potato”? Why didn’t they use a squash or onion? Why was it a vegetable used, and why not a flower like, “Couch Daisy”? As you can see, this question probably has no simple answer.
What brought this to mind, one might ask. The event that cause this process of evaluating and ole saying, started the other evening. The day was at an end, I was able to drag my ole senior body into the Ford’s TV room and crawl to the Ford’s ole recliner. It took a few minutes, but I was able to get situated onto the recliner. My ole body had just started to relax, when the Ford’s pot hound, “Tres”, came into the room.
Tres must have had a hard day also, as he appeared to be very tired. I watched him as he staggered over to the Ford’s ole couch, and crawled up onto it. It wasn’t an easy task, but eventually he made it to the reclined position. Luckily he was able to get his head onto a couple pillows. I do have a photo that I will include, possibly you will be able to see how tired he was.

The other day I had nothing to do so, I was thinking about words, and a couple words came to mind. The word “Here”, was the first word that popped into my head. As I understand the meaning of the word, it would be, “In or at this place”. I know my mother used the phrase, “Donnie, come here”, thousands of times. Here was where she was, and I had better get there quick.
If you add a “T” to the word here, you get more or less the opposite of here. A meaning of the word, “There”, could be, “In or at that place”. So the difference would be, “This or That”!
What if we add a “W” to the word here, we would get the word, “Where”. A meaning of the word, “Where”, can be, “At, in, or to what place”? Now we have, This, That or What.
Now I am confused. What was the reason for the above documentary? As I see it, there was no reason other than, I didn’t have anything to do on a cold day, so I began to enter data into the Ford’s ole computer. Now you can see why I tell the grand kids that grandpa is silly, and they believe me!

Bad news! It seems as if the Ford’s ole coffee maker is giving up, and only has a short time to continue to serve the Ford Homestead. It has been acting up for a few weeks and it needed to be de-scaled. The process was performed, and for some reason it began to have small black litter in the hot water. At first we thought it was some ole coffee grounds that was being ejected with the hot water. We cleaned the unit and it still had the little black litter in the water, less than before but still there.
This morning the first cup of hot water had numerous black litter in it. A new unit will set us back possibly 6 months since we are on a fixed income. Even though we are a proud couple, we will accept donations. Please mark them as, “Replace the Ford’s ole coffee maker”.  Those making donations of $50.00 or more will receive a Thank You card.

No hot water, no coffee, tears in my eyes!

As quite as a church mouse 02.21.19

This post is being written on Wednesday.
In all honesty, I have never seen or heard a church mouse, so I can’t be sure that a church mouse is actually quiet. Possibly I should have said, it’s so quiet it seems as if it is not here. Not being use to the quiet, it leaves me with an odd feeling, yet somehow calming.
Almost as if it’s not mine,
It doesn’t have that ole whine,
Could this be one of a kind,
                          This church mouse of mine.
You got that right, I can’t say, “I am a poet and don’t know it”!    Heck it wasn’t even a good try, I may stop and wonder why, I have all these tears in my eye, maybe I should just cry!

The sun is shining but it is still rather cool outside, about 49 degrees. The Tres and I went out back at which time I proceeded to collect stool specimens from various areas in the back 40. Tres has two areas that he frequents, which make the retrieval of the deposits somewhat easier than looking throughout the back 40.
After the collection was completed, I began to consider the demolition of the kid’s ole fort. There has been no kids in the fort for some time now, Gabi has basically out grown the ole fort and Alex is more interested in his computer, than playing outside.
I have started a plan in my head, nothing on paper yet, to demolish the kid’s ole fort, and use some of the wood to begin a shed for the riding mower. Presently, the mower stays outside under a tarp. The kid’s ole fort has several items in it, from flower pots to rakes, and shovels. There is a kids wading pool that Tres never used. There are also toys in the ole fort.
I may put together a plan on paper and see just how much work would be involved.
Also the kid’s ole swing could be moved, I don’t know where yet, and a porch swing put in place of the two kids swings. There would be a lot of work in these projects but it might keep me out of trouble.

I did receive the two cooling pads for the lap tops. I have installed both pads and it is amazing how noisy the ole pad was. When I started the computer with the ole pad installed, the noise was very loud for the first couple minutes, then it quieted down. I had gotten use to the fan noise and didn’t pay any attention to it. These new pads a very quiet from the start, to shut down. When I start the computer now, not hearing any noise, I keep checking to see if it is really on. The coolers also have blue LEDs, which is blue lights for that one person who is not familiar with the LED.
They are quiet as a church mouse!

Quietly listen, you will learn!

Always quiet and almost respectful; Don Ford

Cold and rain 02.20.19

The Presidents Day holiday is over. Truthfully I do not know why a president needs a holiday. Presidents have people doing everything for them and all they have to do is look like they are working, so why do they have a holiday?

Well, I will tell you why. The presidents holiday was created in an effort to provide the unionize government employees another day off work with pay. Some try to tell us the president’s day was created to honor George Washington. George isn’t around, so he will not know of the so-called, “Honor”.

Let’s move to a subject that is more positive in nature. My present spouse and I, made the long journey to the town of Clifton TX yesterday, just so we could have lunch at the Bunk House.       Dalton, the food was great!

As you would know, if you read Tuesday’s posting, we were not allowed to venture forth Monday for lunch, possibly due to the Presidents holiday. We decided a second attempt was necessary.

My first wife had an appointment yesterday morning, and as planned, following the appointment we began the long and stressful trip to Clifton, (approximately 36 miles one way), in the Ford’s ole Chevy, even though it was raining.

Before that one rude person asks, no my spouse of 5 decades was not required to ride in the back of the Ford’s ole Chevy, in order to pick up aluminum cans on the way to Clifton. That would be crazy! It was raining, so she rode inside the Ford’s ole Chevy. It was a little more time consuming when she had to get out and pick up some aluminum cans, but I would rather take a little extra time, so my favorite wife would not be wet from the rain.

When we returned home from the Bunk House, I went to the mail box, and in the Ford’s ole mail box there was a check from the IRS. Did you know that the IRS will send you a check for the amount you over paid, even if it was as much as $49.00. Do you know how happy the Ford family is, now that they have a check from the IRS? What will we purchase with that much money?

Birds on a wire 02.19.19

Yesterday morning about 10:00am as I was driving home from the coffee place, I observed a group of birds on three electrical wires. I was driving on Hewitt drive, and these birds were across from the “Mc” hamburger place. Yes, I have seen large groups of black birds on wires in the past, especially near takeout restaurants.  I have always thought they gathered in large groups so they could defecate on our vehicles.
As I observed these black birds on those three wires, they suddenly as a group all more or less fell off the wires, all at the same moment, and landed on the ground about 40 feet below. I have always thought it was interesting to see flocks of these black birds fly in groups, all turning at the same time as if they have someone instructing them.
Seeing several hundred black birds drop from those wires as one group, was to me, incredible.
The winter weather has closed in on us, and I don’t think we even made it to 50 yesterday. I do have a photo of a plant that seems to be flourishing here at the Ford Homestead. Some say it had grown this well do to the B. S. which I spread, which to some, is considered as fertilizer.

That one onion may be the total extent of the Ford’s garden this year. (Actually, the onion was in with other onions but it decided to begin to grow so I planted it.)
The Ford’s ole computer has a cooling pad under it. What is a cooling pad, that one person wants to know, it is a device that is placed under a lap top and has a fan which helps keep the computer cool. One of my sons was in the room when I started the computer the other day and the cooling pad made a lot of noise. He said, you can by a new pad for about $20.00. That got me to thinking, possibly I could afford a new cooling pad.
I checked several web sites for prices on these pads. A local company had one for $24.00 and I could pick it up that day. I went to said store and looked around. I found a cooling pad for $39.00. An employee approached me and asked if he could help. I said, “I want one of those but cheaper”. He explained that they did not have one that is cheaper. I noted that their web site said they do. He said you can probably order it but we don’t have it in store. I said thanks and left the store.
Arriving at home, I went back to the Ford’s ole computer and the web site indicated they had the $24.00 unit in stock for immediate pick up. The sales person was wrong!
I went on line and ordered two cooling pads for a total of $21.00, no tax and no shipping. They arrive tomorrow. (That is $10.50 each.)

Did we get to go to the Bunk House for lunch yesterday? No we did not. I called and they did not answer the phone, so they were either closed, or so busy they couldn’t answer the phone. I might get to go today!

He is good, sometimes. This morning was one of those times when Tres was good. It is very cold and I did not want to go outside with him in the cold, I opened the door and he went out by himself. He looked around, did his business, went to the paper, picked it up, returned to the house and I did not need to go out! Good Boy!

Check the price, you can get a better deal!

They are from Cuba 02.18.19

Would you believe, my favorite wife and I won a free trip and we chose to go to Cuba? It was an all-expense paid trip and we were gone from home for 7 days. We traveled from Home to Cuba the first day, we were there for 5 days, and then the last day was travel home.
It was a very interesting visit, and there are still many of the old cars from the 50s still in use. Most of them have been modified many times, so they are not even close to being original.
What?            You don’t believe what I am saying!          Ok, I don’t believe it either. In truth, my favorite wife and I have not gone anywhere.
We do have friends who are not on a fixed income and they do travel. When we heard that they were going to Cuba, I asked if they could get me a Cuban cigar. In the photo below we can see three cigars and two boxes which contain two more cigars, all from Cuba. I do not smoke but I will obviously try to smoke a Cuban cigar.

For years we have been told that the Cuban cigar is something special, and that might be. I hope one of these cigars, is a special cigar. I am not a connoisseur but I think I can tell the difference between good and very good. I do not know what they cost but I have been told they were much less expensive in Cuba. The statement in the white square, in Spanish basically says, can be bad for your health and habit forming.
Our summer like weather has changed to winter like weather, with a gusty wind. The temp outside is supposed to get up to 52 degrees, so if you can stay out of the wind, it’s not too bad but as soon as you step out into the wind, it is full blown winter time.
Today is presidents day, I am not sure why but it is considered a holiday for some. My present spouse and I have the day off. Wow, we have the day off and I have no idea what we will do. I would enjoy going out to the Bunk House for lunch but I am not sure they are open on Mondays. My first wife suggested I call after a while and see if they are open. Why didn’t I think of that? Now you know why she is also my favorite wife.

Listen to your spouse, they are correct, occasionally!

Odd subjects 02.16.19

Thursday: I went to the store and bought 10 bags of dirt. I took them from the pallet, placed them on the cart, pushed the cart to the truck and removed them from the cart placing them in the bed of the truck. At some point I strained my left arm, yes it hurt!
I returned home and was able to unload one bag onto the Ford’s ole red wagon.
What?                         You want to know what?       Yes I paid for the 10 bags of dirt, after placing them on the cart, and prior to loading them into the truck. Do I need to provide every detail of my actions?  *%#@
Even though my arm was hurting, I did remove 5 stepping stones, and filled in the depressions with dirt from the bag, which I purchased for $1.65! I then reinstalled two of the stepping stones. Now the stepping stones allow one to walk from the drive way to the flag pole.
I am still working on a way to smooth out the ruts in the yard that came from the sprinkler installation. When I mow it is easy to find these ruts, especially when I step into one of them. If you just stand there looking for them it is more difficult to see them, as the grass in the ruts is level with the other grass. I will keep trying.

Friday: I walked outside this morning and it was a warm 52 degrees with no wind. I surveyed the neighborhood and then looked up, where I saw, “A rip in space”. In the photo below you will see this rip in space, and it was only there for about 4 minutes, then it was gone. For more information about these rips in space see the posting of Feb. 7th, 2019.

It is only supposed to reach 83 degrees today, I will try to sit outside if it isn’t too cool, I know some fresh air would be good for my ole senior body.
Well we had a record high for the day, it hit 86 degrees! Can you believe that my first wife purchased a new black berry plant for me, and I had to work in the tremendous heat installing it?
Arriving at the job site, it was determined that I would need to move the posts that had been previously installed, for another black berry plant. That plant had been transplanted last fall from our main berry patch. Why would I need to move the posts? I would need more room behind the plants at harvest time (more room less stickers in my body). Yes, that meant extra work in the hot sun.
One would think moving the two post would not be such a big deal, and in fact it wasn’t. The problem comes from the plant that was already planted. Would I move it in order to have it in line with the new plant?  After hours of deliberation, it was decide to not move the plant.
I had to dig a hole the size of a one gallon flower pot. My helper, Tres, was inspecting everything I did. That dog should have been a detective, he is always inspecting something.
To make a short story longer, the black berry was successfully planted.

Saturday: the weather has changed, it is supposed to only be in the high 50s today. My present spouse and I are invited to a birthday party this afternoon. The party will be at one of the local restaurants. What could be better than food and friends! The above photo is not good, it was taken on a cold and cloudy Saturday.       Click to not enjoy.

May all your work be appreciated!

Can't take it 02.14.19

The other afternoon, after picking up my favorite Grandson (aka, only grandson) he reached into his back pack and pulled out a piece of peppermint candy. He stated that his buddy had given him the piece of candy.
I said granny has some peppermints, if you want to get some to take with you to school.  He went on to say, we can’t have candy in school. I asked, not even if you wait until recess to eat it. He said no, we can’t have candy. I jokingly asked if they could have guns in school. He said NO, we can’t have guns, and we can’t have money.
I understand no guns, but I don’t understand why no money. I guess I understand no candy or chewing gum, as they could be laced with weed (aka marijuana).

I had a teacher (back in the olden days) that would let us chew gum or eat a piece of candy in class, as long as it didn’t bother anyone else, and if you gave him some.
Speaking of olden days, I went to a two room country school (1958 & 1959). It was winter and the creek across the street from the school was frozen over. The teacher took the entire class to the creek during recess, and we all got to play on the ice. There was some slipping and falling but no one got hurt. They would not do anything like that now days. Heck, if it is that cold now days, they don’t even let them go outside.
I guess we were tougher kids in the olden days. J

It’s Valentine’s Day and yes I got my favorite wife roses and a card. She is going out to lunch with some friends and did not invite me. There are no tears in my eyes even though I was ignored, you know, I was treated like I did not exist. The group of her friends are all female, and they would have just talked about lady things, so I am glad I was not invited.

It is supposed to be warm today and tomorrow. Heck tomorrow it may hit 83 degrees here in Hewitt. There are a few projects I want to do such as remove some stepping stones. These stones were placed there by me, in hopes that we would use them allowing the grass to not be walked down. For the most part, the stones are not used so removal is inevitable.  I will need to purchase some bags of dirt to fill in the holes left from the stones.
Also, last year’s sprinkler system install left lines in the yard everywhere they dug a ditch for the pipe. I want to attempt to smooth the yard by filling in those ditches.
As you can see, I will be working my hands to the bone, and spending money on bags of dirt. It is so difficult being on a fixed income.
I also would like to get some new black berry plants, for a second black berry patch, more money to be spent!
Trees are starting to bud out, I guess spring is coming.

Retirement, don’t do it, and you won’t be on a fixed income!

Past history 02.13.19

The following poem was written in 1940 by my mother. She lost her young daughter to Pneumonia 03/05/1940. I never knew my sister Della, she passed from pneumonia before I was born, which was 79 years ago. The pome was use recently in my nephew’s funeral.

                                       Beyond the Blue

Each gentle breeze, each sunset glow

                        Each little Raindrop here below,

Is but a part of God’s great plan,

and purpose in the life of man.

AND SOMETIMES WHEN DEEP GRIEF OR CARE

IS ALMOST MORE THAN I CAN BEAR,

IT SEEMS SO NATURAL FOR ME

TO WONDER WHY IT HAD TO BE,

BUT DEEP WITHIN MY HEART I FEEL,

THAT IN ALL THINGS TIME WILL REVEAL,

THAT WISDOM OF HIS GUIDING HAND,

                        AND SOMETIME I SHALL UNDERSTAND

AND THEN GIVE ME STRENGTH ANEW

TO LOOK UP THERE BEYOND THE BLUE,

AND KNOW THAT SOMEDAY, WE WILL SHARE,

                        THAT HOME TOGETHER OVER THERE.

My mother wrote poems at various times for various reasons, during her 94 year life. Maybe she passed on the writing gene to me, and that maybe why I like to bother you all, with my blog postings.

Enjoy the day, be nice to others, and me!
