It is over, I am full, Holidays.

I thought I would say hello from the Ford Homestead just to let you know we made it through the Christmas holiday ok.  The grand kids didn’t get many toys, you know we are on a fixed income and need to be somewhat frugal at times.
There were more packages for the kids than what are shown in this photo.
I am happy to report that we had a second pecan pie from our little tree and this time I was able to get a photo. I would like to report that the pie taste even better than it looks.
My wife of 43 years got me a new tooth brush for Christmas. Retired people on a fixed income must to be happy with little things that don’t cost too much.  I received several other nice gifts, along with some much appreciated gift cards. Obviously I was on the nice list this year.
I did purchase a toy for myself, it is a Tablet computer.  I am having fun learning how it works since it is somewhat different from the typical PC.
Changing the subject somewhat, I thought this photo of Tejas and Molly might be interesting.  They don’t fight like cats and dogs, they put up with each other.
We hope you had as nice a Christmas Holiday as we did and please do not go out on armature night.

Well, it is the 21st and we are still here

The day isn’t over yet maybe the world is still going to end today…
December the 21, 2012 and all is well.
Darn I went and screwed up. I was thinking that the world was coming to an end so I took our life savings out from under the mattress. There was $823.16 in cash under that mattress.  I wanted to be in good graces with the man above when the world came to an end so I decided to do something good with our life savings.
It is Christmas time so I got a small box and put all the money inside and taped the box shut.  I even put some Christmas wrapping paper on the box and it looked nice.
My wife of 43 years and I decided to donate our life savings, all $823.16 to a deserving charity.  Believing the world was coming to an end we thought a generous gift from us to a deserving organization would help our chances of going up instead of down on judgment day.
There are many deserving organizations to donate to such as the Red Cross and the Salvation Army, so we decided to pick one that might impress the man above.
We took the package to the post office and told the “postal worker” that we had our life savings in this package and we were donating it. The nice postal worker was impressed with the fact that we would donate $823.16, so he said he would put it inside a shipping carton and put the address label on it for us.  He said, “We could leave it to him and he would take care of the package”.  He also said, “We didn’t need to pay postage”.
My wife of 43 years and I were impressed with how nice postal workers can be.
We gave him the name of the Radio Preacher that we wanted to send the money to but we didn’t have the street address. The postal worker said, “I will look it up for you, just leave the package with me”.  I am sure glad we have such nice, friendly and honest employees at the post office.

You know the old saying, “it is better to give than receive”; well that may be a true statement but there are some good points to receiving, especially now that we know the world did not end and our life savings is gone.
Since we have no savings I guess I can start picking up aluminum cans from the road side and looking for road kill again.  I hope the radio preacher uses the money for something good.

Goodbye to you all

Tomorrow is December 21st, 2012. As you know the world is supposed to end Tomorrow. Darn, why did I purchase Christmas gifts if no one will be here to open them, I could have saved the money.
Wait a minute, if we are all going to be gone I should have spent all my money (what little I have)
Well, it has been nice knowing you all.  Do you think it will happen during the day of the 21st or at midnight on the 21st
How do you think it will happen?  Will the earth explode like one giant volcano or what?  This not knowing is messing up my mind.
Do you think it is possible that the Mayan calendar maker just got tired of making the calendars and just stopped at December 21st?
I suggest that each of us decide what we really enjoy doing and do it today and tonight. If you really enjoy a big Chocolate malt or possibly some other drink, maybe a special food you might as well have it, I am sure it will not hurt you now that the world is ending.
I told everyone that I did not want anything for Christmas but it wasn’t because the world was ending.
Oh well, I guess that is it, I may get with my friend, “Jack and diet coke” this afternoon.

Crazy retired man sweeps front yard.

Here it is December 19th, and the outside temperature was 80 yesterday and may be a record 80 again today.  There is nothing like temps in the 80s to make you think about Christmas. Tomorrow morning the temp is predicted to be in the 30s with winds of 20 mph and temps in the teen’s tomorrow night.
The weather guy is suggesting the possibility of snow flurries after Christmas but not a strong possibility.
Yesterday I watered around the house; this drought is really bad and our pour ground is shrinking, leaving big cracks. I also gave Tejas a bath which he appreciated.
This morning I decided to attempt to pick up some of the acorns at least in the areas where we walk. The grass is the areas where we walk is in poor condition, I don’t like to use a rake as it pulls up the runners and that is not good for the grass.  I have my old broom and I use it to sweep the acorns into a pile then I sweep the acorns from the pile onto a shovel then put them in my little red wagon.
In all honesty my little red wagon isn’t little but it is red.
I often wonder what people think as they drive by and see a retired senior citizen sweeping his yard. I keep expecting the Hewitt Yard Police to stop and check out my mental abilities.

Ask, and ye shall; seek, and ye shall; knock, and it shall be

Good morning from the Ford Homestead of Hewitt, TX.
I was actually thinking about “listening to the sounds around me” as I sat in my rocker having a cup of coffee. My rocking chair is just outside the garage door so the sounds were from the outside world.
As I sat there it reminded me of sitting in a deer stand from before sun rise and listening to the sounds as the day began. With the exception of the occasional car driving past the sounds heard from my rocking chair are very similar to what one will hear in a deer stand.
As I pondered about the act of listening, a thought popped into my head, “Listen and you hear, think about what you heard and you will learn”.
Then quotes from the bible came into my head from the olden days of attending the First Pentecostal Church in Cape Girardeau, Mo. “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock and it shall be opened unto you”.
In both quotes (mine and the bible) you must do something to get something.

            Let’s all do something today!

Best Buy Concerns

Friday, December 14, 2012
Best Buy concerns:

Today December 14th, 2012 was my third attempt to get a $25.00 savings code from Best Buy.
The savings code was a two day event Nov. 25th and 26th.  Purchase $250.00 from Best Buy on either of those two days and their advertisement stated, they will send you a savings code, “emailed to you within 4 to 7 days”.
On November 25th I purchased on line more than the required $250.00.  I picked the merchandise up at the store on Nov 25th. I did not receive the email with the savings code within the 4 to 7 days per Best Buy advertisement.
On December 4th, I phoned Best Buy and explained that I had not received the email saving code.  I was told, “You will receive a $25.00 gift certificate within the next 3 to 5 business days”. I did not receive the gift certificate or other communication from Best Buy.
On December 12th at 10:00 AM I again called and explained the situation.  I was told “you will receive and email or phone call from Best Buy within 24 to 48 hours”. I did not receive any communication from Best Buy.
On December 14, 2012 at 11:30 (a little more than 48 hours since I last contacted Best Buy) I again called Best Buy (888-237-8289) and again explained my problem. I explained, this is the third call I have made and my problem has not been solved. I was told, “The other agent had issued the $25.00 certificate but it did not go through”.  This agent then said “he would issue the certificate and this time it will go through”. I was told “you will receive an email conformation within 24 to 48 hours” and “you should keep the confirmation”.  He told me, “The certificate will be mailed to my mailing address in 10 to 14 business days”. That means there is a good chance I will not receive the certificate until the New Year, depending on what Best Buy considers business days.
After talking with the agent I made the above notes.  I then went to the mail box to see if we had any mail. In the mail was the $25.00 gift certificate from Best Buy.  Now this presented a new concern; I now need to call them back to tell them I received the certificate.
This certificate was probably approved to be sent after the first call to BB. There seems to be a big delay in the approval to send something and actually receiving the item.

I wrote the following statement when I was upset and now that I am not upset I am still of the same opinion.
It is my opinion; Best Buy in its written advertisement and in its verbal communications has provided me with untrue, inaccurate or false information. This company obviously does not follow up with customers who have concerns or problems.

December 17th, 2012
I believe Best Buy has a system that is supposed to work; they hire people from a call center in another country to handle their problems and do not give them the means to solve a problem. Big companies wonder why there are perceptions from the customer that they don’t care.
Big companies could solve many of their problems if they, asked some customers for their opinions (not these surveys that are done by an outside company but a sit down discussion with customers face to face; group discussions will not be effective as the group will usually follow the lead of a dominant participant) and then have management actually consider what they have been told.  This will never happen because management (the highly educated management team who “understand” how companies should be ran) will never stoop so low as to get information from a non-professional.
Big companies like Best Buy should occasionally have one on one meetings with some of the local customer service employees; I believe they have a better understanding of customer concerns than the surveys that are taken by the outside service.
Ok now I am done with this rant; I hope you have a good day.

In the beginning was the Cell phone

Yes I do understand that everyone has a cell phone and most of them are considered “smart phones”. My phone is not smart and possibly if I were smarter I would have a smart phone.
The term “smart phone” means different things to different people. There is a group of people that believe having a “smart phone” means they are smart. There is no doubt that these people seem smarter, the phone does everything for them except wipe their      nose.
What did you think I was going to say? You always have your mind in the gutter.

I did drop my cell phone (not a smart phone) into the toilet at home.
Yes, I quickly reached in and pulled it out. If I had been at a public toilet I would have left it there.
No, I had not used the toilet, the water was clean. No I would not tell you if I had used the toilet.
Yes, I was able to dry it out and it worked after placing it in a bowl of dry rice for a day.  I learned about using rice from the Kim Kamando radio show.
Possibly, if I would have had a smart phone it would have been able to swim in the toilet and maybe get out by itself.

I bought my first cell phone over 25 years ago. Back in the early to mid-80s there were few cell phone towers and service was not very good. My first cell phone was called a bag phone. It was named bag phone because it was a huge phone and battery placed inside a canvas bag with a big zipper on top not because it reminder you of your spouse. The hand set was the same size of a house phone if you remember what a house phone was.
I think my first plan was for 30 minutes of so called free calling and 25 cents per minute after that.
As long as you stay inside the service area everything was alright (you could make and receive calls). The service area was basically Waco and 5 to 10 miles around.  If I was driving to Temple which is 25 or so miles south of Waco, I would need to call 411 on the cell phone when I arrived in Temple to register my phone into that system.  If I didn’t call 411 the cell phone systems would not know where I was and calls would not be received.
Yes I have had the same cell phone number and been with the same carrier since I purchased my first bag phone. If you know the number you know it is very easy to remember.

The carrier AT&T should offer discounts to users who have been with them for more than a quarter century.

Cool after Thanksgiving ride 11-24-12

This ride started at 8:00am on “Cool Saturday” following “Black Friday”.

Before I get into my extra cool ride I would like to show you some natural Christmas decorations in our neighborhood. The tree below is just a couple houses away from our home.
Red and Green provided by nature. I assume the tree decided to turn partly red because these neighbors do not decorate for Christmas.
Now for the Cool Saturday ride. The day started with a short ride in 40 degree perfectly clear weather with no wind to the Flying J truck stop, where we had planned to meet and begin the ride at 9:00am.  Since I arrived early I went inside and had breakfast at the Denny’s.
The ride route was put together by Jason with a text message stating the route, start time and starting point. I had no idea who would be riding today but one or twenty one, it would be a good day to ride. I decided if no one showed for the ride I would head down to San Antonio and have lunch at the Sea Island.
At 9:00am I went outside to see who I would be riding with. Jason was there ready to ride but the other invitees were either busy or it was too cool for them to ride. We started this ride with a temp of 42 degrees. Jason led the ride as we headed southwest. We had ridden about 20 miles when I asked Jason to pull over so I could put my ear plugs in. For some reason the radio sounds better coming through the speakers in the helmet if I have ear plugs in.
You may also want to know, that I took a minute and put a second coat liner inside my jacket, as it was a somewhat cool ride in 40 degree temps at 70 mph.
We had an excellent ride continuing to the west. If you live in Texas you would know it is deer hunting season and the hunters had many camps set up. Many of the hunters have nice camping trailers and at times we would see several trailers parked together in a field.
Below is a photo of a view with at least two deer stands in the photo.
The photo below shows some of the prairie land we rode through. There were plenty of curves and hills in the ride too. The photo below reminds me of riding in New Mexico.
One of the high spots of the day was our stop for lunch in Bend Texas. The place we ate lunch could not be called a restaurant but they did make hamburgers and fries. Below is Bad Bob’s Bend Store where we ate lunch. We went inside and place the order and paid then we went outside and they brought the burgers out to us.

There is a sign (below) indicating how good the food was at Bad Bob’s Bend Store. You might also notice the rusty barrow below the sign. It had hundreds of holes in it from being shot with guns.
A sign in the window indicates how good their service is. You may note they have my name in their window.
As we enjoyed our food, (it was good food) there were several people arrived to eat of which most seemed to be hunters. We spoke to one man who had been deer hunting with his three sons. Below we see their morning kill, a 300 pound hog.
After lunch we continued our ride in temps that were near 60 degrees. Jason knew of a suspension bridge so we decided to ride to it. It was about a mile off the main road and this gravel road was like a wash board. Seriously the road had bumps about 6 inches apart for most of the one mile. Even though there were no pot holes, this was a rough road to ride.
The bridge was possibly 100 feet above the river, it was worth the ride. The bridge had a wood floor that popped and creaked as we rode across. We stopped to take a couple photos.

(You may click on any photo to see them larger)

We continued our ride eventually stopping for gas in Goldthwaite, TX. It was 2:45 and we had to decide whether we continued the ride which would take another couple hours or get on highway 84 and ride directly back to Waco. The temp had risen to a warm 64 degrees and we knew it was going to begin to cool down now that the sun was getting lower. We decided to get on 84 and make a fast trip home.
We did exceed the speed limit most of the way back to Waco. I arrive home a little after 4:00 and my odometer indicated 318 total miles for this Cool Ride.

Its Grinch time again.

This year it came a little early. Usually the Grinch in me appears the day after Thanksgiving, this year it came a couple days before Thanksgiving.

I hope this note finds you well and that you and your family had an excellent Thanksgiving. Here at the “Fords of Hewitt Homestead” we had our family together, and as usual, too much to eat. Friends dropped by to visit and enjoy and afternoon slice of turkey and some pie (except for Cayson who had two plates full while he was here, and he took two plates full with him)
As usual our Thanksgiving meal was a huge success, mostly due to my first wife’s efforts. She is an excellent cook and during the holidays puts too much effort into everything she does.
That brings us back to the, “Grinch time again” heading. Although I do enjoy the holidays I do not enjoy the decorations that go with the holiday. The shed in the back yard (notice I did not say” my” shed since it is  used for storage decorations) is where about half of the Christmas decorations are kept. At this point I should also note that fall, spring and Easter decorations are also stored there.
If it were not for my skill at stacking, storing and packing the shed would be nothing but decorations. My first wife of 43 years also fills closets with decorations and who knows what she has under the beds.
A couple days before Thanksgiving she instructs me to,
Bring fourth the Decorations.
You may have noticed that statement has somewhat of a Biblical or Authoritarian sound to it. It was not a request and I knew I had better get it in gear.
Removing the decorations from the shed is no small task due to the fact that anything that is mine must be removed from the shed before I can get to the “decorations”. Now you may be starting to understand the “Grinch time again” comment.
I should, in all fairness state, this year the weather was warm and pleasant unlike most preceding years where I was forced to work in cold, windy and sometimes wet weather.
My part of the decorating process is to bring the decorations from the shed to the garage and then put up the lights along the edge of the roof across the front of the house.
I believe the outside work is now complete although there are the occasional maintenance items such as a wise man may fall over or a light may burn out.
My first wife has begun the inside decorating process and we now have three (3) Christmas trees in the front room. I have no idea how many she plans to put up this year but she has had as many as eleven (11) Christmas trees in the house.
Last night our grandkids arrived after dark. All the outside Christmas lights were on plus the inside decorations were also lighted. I was in the bed room when they came in and I heard a lot of wows and I love Christmas. It was the first time they had seen the decorations all illuminated.

posting new cat

I have named this cat Miss Molly; she is also known as Princess Molly.

This young cat is about 4 months old and in size is almost grown. She has lived outside so being in our house around people and Tejas could be a challenge. She is being taught to not jump on the table.
The first two nights she was placed in a cage but the third night she was allowed to have the run of the house.
Amazingly she has not hurt Tejas and he doesn’t seem to care about her.
Donna and Gabi have already dress the cat in a pink tutu (poor cat). Although Miss Molly put up with being dressed like a doll, if you look at her expression she was not totally in agreement with the choice of outfit.

We hope you have a nice Thanksgiving and are able to enjoy family and friends.

Promoted to Chaperon

Chaperon; an adult who accompanies or supervises young people on social occasions.

Chaperon, how can I be chaperon; I don’t consider myself an adult.

Have you ever been invited to attend a kindergarten school trip to the zoo? Kinda sounds like fun spending a day at the Zoo with 5 year old kids.

We see all the kids (I use the word kids and not children) unloading from the school bus. (Click on the photos and see a clearer version)
Gabi in the pink coat, with a couple friends. It was cool when we arrived at 9:00am, we all has our jackets on.
This is a group picture; the tall on is the teacher.
Gabi descending like a rock on the slide.
Gabi kept an eye on me; she didn’t want an elderly senior to get lost.
Lunch was eaten on the ground; it was the brown bag special. Each kid brought their own. We chaperons had nothing to eat and I was hungry.
You can’t believe the amount of noise that screaming kids can make inside a TP.
Gabi came out of the cocoon and turned into a beautiful butterfly.
This photo is of Gabi and others having a drink of water before boarding the bus to go back to the school.

Other than being so tired I could hardly walk and hungry enough to eat a double cheese burger with fry and a root beer, (which I purchased on the way home) it was a good day.

Cut the Cord

We are still receiving pecans from the little tree and most of them now seem to have the umbilical cord attached.

Being from Missouri I have a tendency to mispronounce words and the result is not being able to spell the word. I have always pronounced umbilical as ambilical.

Speaking of umbilical cords I was a volunteer fireman for twelve years. We ran first responder on medical calls almost always arriving before the EMS people.  I always hoped we would have to deliver a baby but it never occurred while I was with the department. I always thought it would be something neat to do as long as I did not know the woman giving birth and it was here second or third child.
The above specimen shows the state of many of “The Ford Homestead Pecans”. They fall from the tree still wrapped in the green outer layer. The part that connects to the tree is at the top where the cord connects to the green shell. The pecan is attached to the cord farther away from the tree.  So the cord lies alongside the pecan inside the green covering. One would think the pecan would connect at the top but nature has its reasons.

It is Sunday afternoon and the rain/storms seem to have gone elsewhere. I think it would be appropriate to say it is “dryer than a popcorn fart”.
This professional photo is by Don, click on it to get a better view.
My morning started out with my coffee maker not working. Being on a fixed income I did not need this extra expense. My wife of 43 years would not rest until I purchased another coffee maker.  The new coffee maker works well and it is surprisingly cleaner than the old one.

Patrick and Karla came up Saturday and we went to George’s for lunch. It was Karla’s first time at Georges and I think she enjoyed it. We did not have the “Big O”, although we did have Texas Tooth Picks (thin sliced peppers dipped in a batter and deep fried, you dip them in ranch dressing) and White Wings (cheese inside a jalapeno pepper, the pepper wrapped a piece of a chicken breast, and bacon wrapped around the chicken breast) which were baked to perfection.

My wife of 43 years made tamales last week (I think she said she made 17 dozen) but ran out of something and will begin again next week. Patrick has indicated that he may come up and help with the Tamales; he wants to learn how to make them. I offered to help but my offer was not accepted.

There is a free lunch at Do it Best Corp. Waco, TX this week, I plan to attend. It is their Thanksgiving lunch and old retired employees are invited. Being on a fixed income a free meal is always a good thing.

I believe I get to go to school and have lunch with Gabi on Thursday. Eating with the little kids is always interesting.

Deer Don;

This morning started like hundreds of other mornings in Hewitt, TX. How was I to know this morning would be profoundly different?

I got out of bed at 6:00am got dressed and made coffee.  I turned the TV on to catch the news and also turned the computer on to see if I had mail. About 6:30 I went into the front room and pretended to look at the Wall Street Journal. I get the Journal because I had some airline miles that were going to expire and I could get magazines and the journal for free.
About 7:00 I shave and finished dressing as usual then I got another cup of coffee and went outside. I go outside each morning to have coffee and wait for Gabi to get ready for school. I drive her to school each morning and my amigo Tejas rides with me.
This morning I had walked to the end of the drive way to observe the fine November morning. The temp was about 68 degrees and the blue Texas sky had some small puffy clouds.
This excellent morning was about to become somewhat exciting for me and Tejas.
Now that I think about it, if you read the posting from August 24th, “Cash Crop” you may think I was telling the truth back then. This event would have been easier to explain if I was smoking something but I was not.
As I stood there pondering the workload I had placed upon myself for the day I noticed something to my right. Just as it caught my attention Tejas saw it and immediately went into the attack mode.
I could not believe what was happening. A full grown Buck (aka a white tailed deer) came running full speed from our neighbors yard, through our yard, he jumped our drive way and proceed through the other neighbors yard. Tejas began the pursuit but I called him off. The deer continued full speed up through yards and about 4 houses’ up the street he turned right and vanished between the houses.
Deer hunting, (gun season) started last Saturday. This buck was evidently evading a hunter.
Stoned Stunned I looked back to my right to see if there were more deer following him. My neighbor and her son were standing on their sidewalk; I assume they saw him and can back up my story.
I called Donna, my wife of 43 years, to tell her what I had seen.  It was as I thought, she did not believe me.
Why did I call her rather than walk inside to talk to her, you ask? It is easier on retired people to call than walk. It also kind of bugs Donna when I call her from the yard.
Many years ago when there were fewer houses in the area we had seen Road Runners, Horney Toads and Wild Turkeys in the neighborhood but never a Deer.
Speaking of Wild Turkey, a bottle of Wild Turkey would be a good Christmas present for me if you have not decided yet.
I only got a quick glance of the beast as he passed within 20 feet of me, I did see at least 4 points. He had a tall rack and it is very possible he could have been a six pointer.
The rest of my day should be somewhat boring as I plan to mow the grass.
Donna, my wife of 43 years, is making tamales today. She had cooked the meet yesterday and will be doing the hard part today. Most everyone enjoys Donna’s tamales including me.
Well I need to get out of here and get to work in the yard.
Donna just asked me to taste the meat that goes into the tamales, and it is good.
