Excellent Service

As you may know I do not usually enjoy shopping, especially when I must deal with uneducated, non-caring, over paid and much less than enthusiastic people.

In the opening statement I referred to those people and not employees. They may be on the clock and they are getting paid, but many are not working.
Today I made one of my rare trips to Wal-Mart. As I drove around the lot looking for a parking space one of the Wal-Mart people (cart person) came out of the store and walked across the pedestrian cross walk at about half speed. This person was probably 20 years old but he was not in a hurry to do his job or get out of my way.
I was looking for an advertised item that cost $2.00. I looked around for the item but could not find them. There were similar items that ranged in price from $5.99 to $10.99.
I interrupted a female employee who had been standing and talking to another female employee.  She said, “There have been a lot of people asking about those, we should find out where they are”.
She then asked the other lady but she did not know where they were.  She walked with me around the department where other more costly items were located.
At one point she indicated that the item was packed in threes at a price $7.95 for 3.  Obviously this Wal-Mart person could not do math and had not taken the time to look through the Sunday advertisement.
She was approached by another Wal-Mart person and the young man did not know where they were.  He did suggest one location where they might be and walked with me to the area but none were found.  Returning to where the young lady was she said she would call management to find out where they were located.
The young man suggested, “They may be in the ad but we may not have them in the store”.
The young lady went back to talking with the other lady, seemingly not caring whether I, “the customer”, lived or died. No one from management came to the area.
We had a couple items in our cart and when we went to check out there was one lane open. The lady at the check put seemed to be doing her job but as I looked around, admittedly I was not happy and was looking for someone who cared, I observed 3 Wal-Mart people that were doing nothing and or had expressions that told me they would rather be doing anything other than being at Wal-Mart.  Notice I did not say they were working even though they were on the clock.
In all fairness there are many good Wal-Mart employees but today I was able to find those that did not do their job well and were not caring about “me”, the customer.

Aliens are here

I know it will be hard for you to believe but they are here and I have proof.

I am sitting in the drive way near the garage door attempting to put this article together.  What, you what to know if I am glad to be home.  Yes I am happy to be back in Texas even though we had a nice time except for the wreck.  It is a little warmer here than it was in NC and it is much drier.  They had about 4 inches of rain last Thursday but when I got home and everything is dry.  I have the sprinklers going now so that gives me a reason to be here in the drive way.
I did mow the yard today and as usual the yard looks better than most of the neighbor’s yards.  I raised the deck on my mower again; it is now cutting the grass about 4 inches. I believe this help keep the water in the ground.
Speaking of mowers I see that the neighbor across the street has a new “riding mower”. Bill works so he can afford the nicer things in life, but those of us on a fixed income we are required to walk behind a mower and get hot and sweaty. This new mower is big and he has one of those big plastic grass catchers on it.  It seems to mow good but it is kind of like trying to turn a tractor and trailer in the yard.
I am planning on winning a new mower from Do it Best.  They are raising money for the united way and if you donate they give you a chance on a riding mower (I hope I can find some money).
Donna is kind of stiff and sore all over from the wreck.  She has lots of bruises and she is not sure just how she got them all. We have been trying to take it easy today and we are not going to Dallas tomorrow.  Hopefully, Sunday will be a day of rest at the Ford House.
Yes, our flights were all good; first class is much nicer that coach and they don’t charge you for checking a bag. The one bad part of the flights was a 3 hour layover in Dallas.
I took 56 dollars with me (I forgot to go to the bank before we left) and I had 30 of it in my pocket when I came home.  Yes, am cheap but that isn’t why I had money left over, they just would not let me pay for anything, nice.
What? You want to know what?
Oh, yes I did start off about aliens and I have the proof.  I was in the front yard picking up sticks and things before I started mowing this morning when I found two alien eggs.  I wanted to put my rubber gloves on before I picked them up. They are very scary looking and I know when they hatch they will probably go around killing people. I wanted to call the US Government to report these eggs but my wife (who doesn’t want her name mentioned) suggested that the Government people aren’t smart enough to know about the eggs.
I thought about calling the history channel, they sometime do shows on aliens and they might want to put me on a TV show. That would be wild, me on the history channel explaining where I found these eggs. Heck I might even get on the today show. I just had a thought; after all that I would have to write a book.  I would still talk to all you little people, even though I would have the “big head”.
Yes I took a photo, see below.
There, the two eggs are proof that alien exist.
What do you mean you don’t think they are?
Ok, if you are so smart tell me what you think they are.

All is well

Good morning Texas and other non-major states. We are still in North Carolina enjoying good weather today, after about 4 inches of rain yesterday.

My wife (who doesn't want her name mentioned) is doing good this morning, after the wreck. She doesn't want her name mentioned because she believes I occasionally say silly or non-truthful things.

All three ladies that were involved in the wreck seem to be doing good this morning other than stiff and sore in places. They now have a rental vehicle and are getting ready to start running again.

I have to start repacking my dirty clothes sometime today. It kind of makes me happy to know the TSA agents will get to handle dirty clothes when they go through my bag this time.

I have had an excellent breakfast and a fair cup of coffee, so it is almost time for a nap. I made the coffee and it should have been excellent since I am well known as a coffee Brewster. Star Bucks has recruited me several times in the past but I did not accept their offer...   The coffee was not excelent beczuse I am using an unfamiliar coffee maker.

Ok, I need to get to the recliner, more later.

Wreck of the week;

My wife (that don’t want her name mentioned) was in a wreck today. They had been shopping and had just purchased large drinks (ice tea and soda). They were stopped at a traffic light when an elderly man ran into the back of their car pushing it into the car in front of them. They ended up in the intersection. There is a good chance the car is totaled. Donna Kay has a bruise on the back of her arm. Donna Rea’s chest hurts from the seat belt. Tammy got her lip busted and bruised her legs.

Basically they are ok, but will probably being sore tomorrow.

They had asked me to go with them but I refused and now I am glad because, I would probably have been the only one to get hurt.

We are getting ready to eat pizza so I got to go now.

Rest and Relaxation

The reason for this trip to North Carolina was to attend a wedding and visit relatives. We have done both. Along with the wedding and relatives there has been days of shopping by my wife and her two nieces. the last couple days they have left early morning and returned late afternoon, tired and with there acquisitions of the day.

I haven't been shopping or working; I haven't been doing anything other than a little R&R, rest and relaxation. I can't say if Donna (who doesn't want her name mentioned) has achieved her goal of visiting all the interesting stores but I am totally relaxed and rested. I am now at a point being over rested, if there is such a thing. I have taken multiple naps daily and last night it was difficult to get to sleep. I really need to go for a long walk but since it is raining the walk is out.

I have been thinking about my next R&R trip, which may be to the hill country for a couple days of Riding and Relaxing. I can almost taste the fish at Sea Island in San Antonio, TX. I should have enough points for a couple free nights in a hotel near Fredricksburg, TX.

Riding in the hill country sounds good until I think about the Texas heat. It would be nice if the day time temperature was about 80 during the day, but that will not happen. Hopefully I can find another rider to go along.

It's Raining

I have been in North Carolina for 5 days and they have predicted rain each and everyday. Finally the weather people have gotten it right.  Rain, rain go away, little Donnie wants to play.
I am working from my small laptop PC which is not convenient for me since I have large hands and the key board is very small.
I did not sleep well last night due to, not doing much yesterday and taking too many naps.
I could go shopping in the rain with my wife (she does not want me to mention her name on the Blog) and the other ladies, I am sure that would be fun?
I know you want to feel sorry for me but don't, I have coffee to drink and I can sit on the porch and watch it rain.

Bird's nest soup

In an attempt to eat like some wealthy people do, I acquired a couple receipts from the internet for “birds nest soup”.
The first one is kind of a desert.
Ingredients :
2 ounces bird’s nest
6 tablespoons rock sugar, crushed
2 cups water

Method :
Soak the bird's nest in cold water overnight, rinse well. Remove any loose feathers or dirt from the bird's nest. Fill up a pot with water and bring to the boil. Add in the bird's nest and simmer for about 5 minutes. Rinse well and squeeze dry. Place the bird's nest in the pot with 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil and simmer until the nest is soft and tender. Stir in the rock sugar until completely dissolve. Serve the sweet delicacies hot.
The second is more a normal soup.
Authentic bird's nest soup is made using the nests of the Swiftlet, a tiny bird found throughout Southeast Asia.
Many westerners think it tastes quite rubbery the first time they try it. However it is quite popular throughout Asia, perhaps because it has the reputation of being an aphrodisiac. It is also costly.
I did not like the ingredients so I delegated them.
Preparation:  Soak bird’s nest in cold water overnight. Drain and rinse. Spread softened nest    pieces on plate; pick out prominent pieces of “foreign” matter (e.g. feathers, twigs) with tweezers. Debone chicken breast, remove membrane and muscle fiber, pound meat with cleaver handle to break down tissue, mince chicken until it is pulp. Make medium thick paste with cornstarch and chicken stock.
Cooking:  Bring rich chicken stock for soup to boil. Immediately add bird’s nest; simmer 30 minutes. Mix dry sherry and remaining stock; dribble slowly into minced chicken. Lightly beat egg whites with a fork; fold gently into chicken so they are not completely   blended. Add salt to soup. Bring soup back to boil and add chicken mixture slowly so soup does not cool. When soup returns to boil, it is ready to serve. You can hold it at this point on low heat. Pour into serving bowl, garnish with green onions and ham.

I gave up on making Bird’s Nest Soup. When I went to get the birds nest the birds flew around my head and made a lot of noise. I thought about taking the eggs from the nest but did not know how long they had been in the nest so it is possible they had baby bird in the eggs.
Needless to say I am still hungry; I will just wait until Donna (who doesn’t want her name mentioned in these notes) cooks supper.

Joke

When I was a kid...

A long time ago in a land far away, I was a kid. Now it’s hard for me to believe I am now an “old fart”.
My mother lived to be 94 years old and on her 70th birthday someone asked, “Mom, do you feel 70 years old?” She replied, “In my mind I am still 16, but my body says I am 70”.
I assume that most of us are like mom; mentally we are younger than our physical age.  Possibly or memories play a big role in causing us to think younger than we are.
When I want to relax I think back to a time when I was 10 to 11 years old.  This was a simpler time, a time before I became interested in girls. We lived in the country in a house that was in the forks of the road. If you were on the front porch looking north you would observe a two lane road that divided into two roads in front of our house. These two roads went to the left and right of our house and both went up hill. The road on the left was known by the locals as snake hill. There were 5 curves on the hill before you arrived at the top. Snake hill was very steep so I would push my bike to the top, and then ride down coasting with no hands on the handle bars. I had to use the brakes to slow the bike and if there were no cars I could literally ride the entire snake hill without touching the handle bars.
There were weeping willow trees around our house. Our house was in a valley and there were woods in all directions.  A stump of an old tree that had been cut down years ago was in the front yard and it had flowers planted around it. This is the only place that I can remember hearing a whip-poor-will call in the evening.
The closest kids were about ½ mile down the road, so I played alone a lot. There was a big propane tank behind the house and I would pretend it was a horse. I would climb on it and pretend I was riding.  When I would pretend I was driving a team of horses, I would sit on the tail gate of dad’s old pickup. I would use one of the long limber limbs from a weeping willow as a whip I could pretend I was heading out west.
There was an Indian Motorcycle that belonged to my brother Carl, parked in the driveway. There was a story about why it was there but we will not go into that now. I use to spend a lot of time sitting on the motorcycle pretending I was ridding.
As a kid, long before I had ever ridden a motorcycle, I had a recurring dream that may have been in part due to that motorcycle.  In the dream I was riding a motorcycle, as I topped a hill the wheels of the motorcycle would come off the ground and I would hang onto the motorcycle preparing to come down on the road but I would always wake up just before I landed.   Later in life I found the sensation I had experienced in my dreams of jumping a hill with a motorcycle was accurate. It felt the same awake as it did in a dream, except awake I got to land.
I remember my first ride on a motorcycle was with my brother Carl on that Indian. We rode into Cape and we were in Sprigg Street and had just crossed Broadway. Broadway was and is just a 2 lane street; I did not want those of you that are not familiar with Cape Girardeau to think we were in a larger metropolitan area. Someone pulled out of a parking space (they were parallel parked) and Carl had to stop abruptly.  After he stopped addressing the driver’s ancestry, I think that was what he was doing because he was using words that I did not normally hear, Carl told me, “If you ever ride a motorcycle you have to watch the idiots in cars, they don’t watch for you”.  Carl was right and it is still true today.
I attended a two room country school that had 8 grades in the two rooms. The school name was Juden School and the creek across the road from the school was also named Juden.
In the basement was the 1st through the 4th grades and on the main floor was 5th through the 8th grades. Unfortunately this school was way behind the town school I had come from. My first day at the school our teacher Mr. Hurt, that was his name and he lived up to it. He was putting some math homework on the board. The problems were simple fractions so I was writing them down on my paper and answering them.  I thought, I will have then done before I leave and not have any home work. Then I found out that he was in front of the 8th graders and it was their homework.  I did not learn anything the rest of the time I was in that school.
The lady that cooked lunch for all of us was Miss Cakie. The spelling is possibly incorrect but her name was pronounced Cake with a long E in the end. She lived on the farm next to the school. One thing I remember was the real butter that was served at every meal. I believe it was made on her farm.
Around the walls of the school room were plywood tables that were on hinges. When they were not in use they were down out of the way, at lunch time the older kids would lift them up and swing out a support under the table. We would go through the line to get lunch and take it to our table. My first meal at Juden School was somewhat of a shock to me.  I sat down at our table and I started to eat. The kid next to me told me to stop eating; they had to pray before we can eat. The teacher, “Mr. Hurt” was also a preacher in a Baptists church and no one ate until they prayed.
There was a game that we played outside and it was called “Stink Box”. There were two sides with the kids would line up in a line on either side. I can’t remember all the rules but if someone from one side caught you, you had to stay inside the “Stink Box” (a box drawn on the ground) until someone from your side was able to sneak over and get you out.  It was fun for us kids.
My memory has failed me as to how I got to school each day, I assume mom drove me to school, but I remember that we did walk home weather permitting. Basically one of the older kids was in charge of the group of kids. We would walk on the side of the road in a line. When you got to the drive to your house you left the group. Obviously the group got smaller the further we walked. From the school to my house was a little over a mile.
Mr. Hurt drove a 57 Ford and he liked to spin the tire when he took off. He may have been a preacher but he drove like a bat out of hell.
During the winter when it was cold enough to freeze ice on the creek Mr. Hurt would take the kids to the creek to slide on the ice. There was a culvert under the road and we all went through the culvert under the road to get to the creek. I doubt that a teacher could do that now.
Once a year our school would go to another small country school and play them in a soft ball game. I guess it was like our play day.  There was no bus so someone would get parents to volunteer to take the kids in their cars.
I guess that is the end of this chapter of “country boy Don”.
