Amputation the only way 12.06.17

I know it sounds terrible, but amputation may be the only way. Unfortunately, some people with diabetes must have a limb removed. I can’t even come close to understanding what losing a leg would be like!

Many years ago I worked for GESCO, aka General Electric Supply Company. We sold to electricians and utility companies. There was an electrician who had a finger missing from his right hand. This finger was his first finger, you know the finger we use mostly. How would a person pick a booger from their nose, without their first finger? What, you think that was a crude comment? If you were to tell the truth, you know you occasionally pick a booger, when no one is looking!

I had asked how he lost the finger, and he said it was crushed in a work accident, and the doctor amputated. He then told me of problems he has. He explained that in his mind the finger is still there and occasionally it will itch. Imagine trying to scratch something that is not there. He also noted that when he reaches into his pocket for change, his mind still thinks there is a finger there.

All that said, amputation is not something one should take lightly.

My wife has been considering this for some time now, and I am almost in agreement with her. The doctor is not yet satisfied that amputation is the best thing, and he is considering alternatives.

I have a photo I want to show you, I wish it was better, but I use the cell phone rather than getting a camera. It is a photo of one of the many trees that are now on display in the Ford’s Homestead. The part of the tree that we have been concerned with is, from one foot above the ground to three feet above the ground. We are also concerned with not only the trees, but all decorations between the one to three foot areas above the floor.

I would like for you to close your eyes and try to imagine if you will, an 80 pound dog who’s tail is about 20 inches long, happily walking past any tree or other decoration. Can you imagine the unintentional destructive power of this happy dog’s tail? And that doesn’t include any items that might somehow end up in this dog’s mouth!

Now you see the problem. If we amputate the dog’s tail, what do we do with the dog’s mouth? Yes, you are correct, we could put a muzzle on him, but a muzzle seems rather harsh, don’t you think? We will continue to work on the problem here at the Ford Homestead.

Different subject:

It is cold! It is supposed to get down to 27 degrees tonight and the prognosticators are suggesting there could be some sleet or snow flurries mixed in with the rain. Yes we have received some needed rain, a little over ½ inch overnight, with more to come today.

Stay warm and safe!

Don Ford
