Birthday Party 06.03.18

Saturday June 2, 2018 was predicted to be a record day for heat. The record according to the weather people (note the politically correct word, “people”) was set in 1910 and was 100 degrees. What do Naturalized Texans do on days when the temp is supposed to be at 101? Well they should stay inside and enjoy the cool air generated by the Ford’s new air conditioner, but…

Naturalized Texans do the same things that Natural Texans do, they get out of the house and do many things like kids baseball games, cooking outside, going to the lake, laying in the sun and not caring how hot it is. This naturalized Texan went to a birthday party. That sounds much better that sitting outside watching Pee Wee baseball, or does it.

The birthday party was in a place named, “Seven Points Texas”. Seven Points is only about 2 hours’ drive from the Ford Homestead. To drive 2 hours in the Ford’s Chevy is an expensive matter. My spouse of 49 years came up with a good idea. She suggested we leave a couple hours early and we drive slow keeping our eyes open for aluminum cans alongside the road. When we would see one she would jump out and get it, toss it in the back of the Ford’s Chevy, then jump back into the vehicle.

That worked for a while, but she got tired of jumping in and out, each time taking off or putting on the seat belt. It only took about 30 minutes of that and she decided to let the end gate of the pickup down and ride on the end gate of the pickup, that way she did not have to take off the seat belt or open the door each time she retrieved an aluminum can.

I was inside the Ford’s Chevy with the air conditioner on and it was very comfortable. My spouse sitting in the bed of the truck was getting fresh air as I drove slowly down the road.

I should note, my first wife did get back inside the Ford’s Chevy while we were on I-45. Once we were away from the interstate, she again went to the bed of the truck. we arrived at the party location in a safe manner and with several pounds of aluminum cans.

The Birthday party was for a seventy year old female, but I will not add a name, because Nellie might be upset if everyone knew she was now 70!

Did I explain that this party was held outside! Everyone was expected to arrive at 5:00 pm, (the hottest part of the day) with the birthday girl arriving at 5:30pm. There were horsd’oevres from about 6:00 to 7:00pm. The entertainment started a little after 7:00 pm, and was an Elvis impersonator.  He was good. We enjoyed the entertainment and then headed for home a little after 9:00pm.

We tried to pick up cans on the way home after dark, but it was too difficult to see the cans and the other vehicles were coming up behind us very fast, so after about an hour my present wife got back inside with me. I am proud of her, she found a lot of aluminum cans on the way to the party.

We had that long drive back home in the dark. The ford’s Chevy is not used to being out after dark, but it persevered, and returned us to the Homestead safe and sound. There were a lot of bugs that gave up their lives on the front of the Ford’s Chevy during the ride home.

All in all, it was a good, but hot, birthday party.

Hot or not, party on!
